Georgia environmental groups are preparing to launch a program to make solar panels cheaper for city of Atlanta residents. The effort, called Solarize Atlanta, will also help with the technical aspects of choosing solar panels and getting them installed.

“We will basically in Atlanta in the next couple months get as many people to go solar at once and use that bulk-buying power to negotiate a cheaper price for solar,” said Jenette Gayer, executive director of Environment Georgia.

Athens, Decatur-DeKalb County and Dunwoody have all had similar programs.

“We want to do this so as to enhance the market for solar, but also reduce our dependence upon more polluting sources of energy,” said the Rev. Kate McGregor Mosley, executive director of Georgia Interfaith Power and Light.

She said she wants to expand access to solar power to all types of property owners, “whether they be residential homeowners or commercial buildings, schools, nonprofits, houses of worship.”

Solarize Atlanta is beginning outreach now and will start taking signups later this year.
