National Institute of Technology with an intention to promote sustainable energy, has introduced 1020 KWp of rooftop solar units on its 13 buildings which were being inaugurated by the chief executive officer of Rourkela Steel Plant Deepak Chattraj.
The institutional buildings in which solar panels have been spread includes the academic block, old mechanical engineering department, lecture assembly, TIIR, ceramic departments, and others.
Power generation is expected to start after a month and the institute targets to produce 200 units every day. “NIT-Rourkela has executed a power purchase agreement with M/S Azure Power Rooftop Private Limited for installation and operation of the solar photovoltaic power plant,” said director of the institute Prof. Animesh Biswas.
He further added that “These solar units will provide us power for 25 years at a price much lower than our present procurement price from the grid without any capital expenditure on our head.”
This solar power undertaking of almost 1020 KWp connected with the Power Grid would now chop down conventional energy need by 33%
Biswas again added that “Besides, we will get clean and noiseless power and will be able to make significant savings on account of diesel cost on our diesel generator sets.”
Appreciating the initiative, Chattraj said, “Solar power is environment-friendly and I am happy to inaugurate such a project. Senior professor Bidyadhar Subudhi, who is chairman of the solar power generation project, informed that as many as 200 streetlights of NIT have been linked and will also be operated on solar power.
