KOLKATA: Going on with the initiative to install roof top grid connected solar panels in schools and colleges across the city, a 10 KW roof top solar panel has been inaugurated at Basanti Devi College. The panel generates about 40 units per day and would help the college authorities to have a Rs 1.5 lakh reduction in electricity bills.
Solar power expert S.P. Gon Chaudhuri, under whose guidance the college authorities have set up the roof top solar panel said that this has been an ongoing process to install roof top solar panels in several schools and colleges across the city.
Apart from the 10 KW roof top solar panel that has been inaugurated, the college authorities would soon get another 5KW solar panel that is being developed by the West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation.
Gon Chaudhuri said that apart from saving power and reducing electricity bills, the use of each 10KW solar panel can reduce about 1,500 kg CO2 emission. “As per the national programme, educational institutions across the country are supposed to generate energy by their own by the year 2022,” he said.
